Puppy Paper Training for Your Peace of Mind
If you live in high-rise apartments or if you are away for long hours, paper training your puppy will to prevent soiling of your carpet or floor. Also paper training can help to properly toilet train your puppy. Here are some useful tips about toilet training puppies.
This method requires a lot of patience on your part and there will be a few accidents now and then but this should not deter you because, once your puppy is paper trained properly you can leave your puppy alone in the house for long hours without worrying. As with all housebreaking methods for dogs, your schedule for feeding, exercising and trips to the papers need to be consistent. Erratic schedules will only confuse your puppy and you will have to deal with frequent accidents. Sticking to regular schedules will also make the job of paper training your puppy fast and easy.
Before starting the actual training you must decide where you will place the paper for the puppy to eliminate. This space is usually a corner where there is least activity. Puppies don't like to eliminate in an area where they eat and sleep. Thus the space you select should be far away from where the puppy usually eats and sleeps. This space should be easy to clean in case the puppy forgets to go on the paper accidentally.
To start with cover the whole floor or a large portion of it with newspaper or any other type of paper that you can spare. If your puppy shows preference for a particular corner then let it be. Progressively reduce the area covered by the paper when it starts to get the idea that it is to go on paper only and not on the uncovered floor. If you are paper training so that eventually the puppy will go to toilet outside then gradually move the paper near the door and then outside the door and finally out of doors. Don't move the paper until you are sure that the puppy gets the idea that it is to go on paper only, otherwise it will get confused unnecessarily.
Be sure to feed the puppy at the same time each day or as close to it as possible, because your puppy will thrive on routine. After it has eaten give a simple command such as "go to bathroom" and lead it to the paper. After some time it will get the idea and go on the paper on its own, when it has done eating. This needs some practice but patience will pay handsomely. To reinforce the habit make a huge happy fuss every time the puppy goes on paper and show some affection or give it a treat. In the meanwhile, to avoid accidents, keep the puppy crated until it is fully paper trained.
In the beginning the puppy will not understand that it has to go on paper. You may have to follow it around after feeding an look for signs that it wants to eliminate. Immediately scoop it up and place it over the paper already laid out for this purpose. Usually it will show the signs by sniffing an area on the floor and circling around a spot. On placing it on the paper give a command like, "Go Potty" or "Go bathroom". Initially it may show some confusion but you have to persist.
Pet stores sell some substances that carry the scent of urination. You can also place an old newspaper from previous occasions that carries the scents of eliminations. Puppies as well dogs are creatures of habit and they like to eliminate in an area that has already been used for this purpose. This they detect by sniffing around and when they get traces of feces or urine they will choose that spot for eliminating. This comes naturally to puppies and dogs.
Your puppy is bound to have a few accidents while paper training and you should not get angry at it or punish it for them. You are trying to gain your puppies trust so punishing will prove counter productive because the accidents are just that, not intentional. Try to find out if you have been inconsistent in your training. Rather than punish, you can clap your hands or start a commotion when you catch your puppy in the act and give your command and immediately lead it to the paper. Eventually, in about a year, your puppy will grow into a dog which understands that it is not acceptable to eliminate anywhere other than designated places.
