How an ESL (English as a Second Language) Teacher Helps with Accent Reduction

A teacher who is most effective at helping a student improve pronunciation will have an understanding of how the speech sounds of English are produced.

Yes. Remember an accent can be reduced but not necessarily eliminated. The goal would be help the student develop clear communication. A teacher who is most effective at helping a student improve pronunciation will have an understanding of how the speech sounds of English are produced. Such knowledge will then enable the teacher to understand why their students have a foreign accent.

Factors That Affect

Some factors that will affect accent are: Voicing, mouth, tongue, lip position, stress and rhythm, intonation, and word parts. Every language group typically has problems with producing certain sounds. For example, Koreans generally have problems with the 'l' versus the 'r' sound. Italian speakers may fail to produce the initial 'h' sound in a word. The word 'heart' may be produced as 'art. So, once the teacher identifies these problem areas they can then work to make sounds more clear. Thus making speech more understandable and the 'foreign' accent reduced. Echo reading is an effective method to help with accent reduction. The teacher literally reads with the student. The student will physically follow along with the text being read with their finger and read "in stereo" with the teacher. Following with the finger and seeing and hearing the word all at the same time. So, three senses are involved thus stimulating the brain.
