Three Popular Potty Training Methods
Potty training your young child can seem intimidating. There are so many different methods that can be used! Here are three of the most commonly used potty training methods.
Practice makes perfect
Many parents begin to slowly introduce the idea of using the "big kid potty," sometime after the age of one. When parents use this method, they create a routine of placing their child on the potty for a given amount of time, for a few times a day. Eventually, the child starts to get the picture and begins using the potty. Successes often receive treats and rewards, such as candy or stickers. This method is pretty simple, however, it can be frustrating as it may take an extended period of time for the concept of using the potty to "click" in the child's brain.
Potty trained in a day
More parents, particularly the impatient type, practice a quick-result form of potty-training. There are many different ways that this type of potty training is accomplished, but the most common way I've seen used involves the child being allowed to run naked with a potty chair available to them all day. This method takes a day (or two, or three) of very careful, eagle-eye watching from the parents, as they'll have to continually and repeatedly place their child on the potty chair (and perhaps spend hours cleaning poop and pee out of the carpet) however, many parents swear by this method.
At their own pace
With our oldest child, we tried to two prior methods and both of them just led to frustration and anger, on both her part and ours. Eventually, we gave up. We decided to let her take it at her own pace; she would potty train when she was ready. Just when we thought she was never going to potty train, she started using the toilet all by herself and hasn't had a single daytime accident since. We've followed this method for our subsequent children as well. Although it can be frustrating at times, it seems to be a less-stressful approach to potty training.
