Beagle Training: Taming Your Wild Beagle Puppy
Dog training can be difficult, especially when dealing with a Beagle. Learning some helpful beagle training tips can greatly improve your relationship with your Beagle puppy.
One of the most immediate obstacles in your Beagle training journey is housebreaking. Due to their stubborn nature, Beagle puppies can be very difficult to housebreak. It is not, however, a lost cause. It is very important to praise your Beagle very strongly every time it does its business outside -- especially the first few times. Beagles are reward-oriented dogs, and do not respond well to, or even entirely understand punishment. If your Beagle puppy eliminates inside the house, it is important to remain calm. Be firm, but do not yell at your beagle, and bring it outside immediately after the accident. Eventually your dog will associate being outside with doing its business, and accidents will become less frequent.
Howling and Baying
Another very distinctive, often annoying quality, of Beagles is their tendency to howl or "bay". Once your Beagle puppy reaches a certain age, it is likely that this will begin to pose a problem. Beagle training in this domain follows the same pattern as Beagle training in housebreaking. The emphasis should not be placed on punishment for doing the wrong thing, but on praise for doing the right thing. Pay extra attention to your Beagle puppy when it is being calm and quiet. Do not punish it when it howls or bays, but do not be afraid to raise your voice with a clear "No!".
Another area where you should focus your beagle training is on digging. Most Beagles love to dig, and may dig right into your garden, or even under your fence to go for a run around the neighborhood. One constructive way to discourage this habit is to simply find a way to keep your beagle occupied when it is outside. Chew toys are helpful, as they serve to distract your dog, and may help it redirect its digging energy. If you have another friendly dog, another option is to encourage your dogs to play together outside. As is standard, praise your Beagle for its acceptable behavior outside, and avoid excessive punishment. You might need to monitor your Beagle puppy at all times when it is outside at first, but with proper encouragement and proper Beagle training, eventually this will become unnecessary.
When it comes to Beagle training, sometimes there is no replacement for a professional dog instructor. Professional instructors can be found in the yellow pages, and through referrals by fellow dog owners. PetSmart is one of the most popular locations for dog training. This is a very attractive option for Beagle owners with full time jobs with heavy time commitments, and first-time dog owners.
Since Beagles learn best through reward-oriented training, it is helpful to learn what kind of treats your Beagle enjoys. Buy several kinds of treats for your Beagle puppy, and experiment until you find out which treats your Beagle is the most enthusiastic about. In moderation, give your Beagle puppy a treat along with praise when it is acting appropriately. This is an indispensable tool for Beagle training.
Beagle training is tough, but it can be fun. Hopefully now you have a better understanding of how Beagles think, and what training techniques work best with them. Now, go train that Beagle!
