Potty Training: Signs Your Child is Ready & How to Get Started
This is an article written for parents of toddlers who are about ready to begin toilet training their children.
There are certain things a child must be able to do in order to be ready and able to train. For example, a child needs to know how and be able to pull their pants up and down. This is a very simple thing, a very simple knowledge that a child must have in order to properly be potty trained. If your child cannot yet independently pull his or her pants up or down then they are not yet ready to be trained.
You can know if your child is ready by simply watching them. For instance, does your child know when he or she needs to "go"? Do you see them grab at their diaper after they have went? A child who is ready to be potty trained knows when they have to go and that they are soiled after they've went. When children are ready they begin to express discomfort with soiled diapers more so than they did before. They'll even begin to ask for a change. My toddler started bringing me diapers!
Another sign your toddler is ready is when he or she can say the words "potty" and can at least express "I need to go potty". A child who is not aware of going when they are going is not ready. A child who doesn't seem to care if he or she is wet or dry is not quite ready either. A child who cannot let you know in some way when they need to go is not ready. Children need to know they have to go before they have gone, and they have to be able to let you know so you can get to the toilet or potty chair quickly.
If your child shows all of the signs it's likely that they are ready to begin potty training. This is when you introduce them to the potty chair, or the toilet. The "big potty", aka the household toilet can be used in place of a potty chair if you get one of those tiny toilet seats to go on it. Some toddlers are a bit afraid of the big potty though and feel more comfortable with a potty chair. The first thing you do is verbally introduce the potty. Simple words such as "Look, child's name, this is the potty. This is where big kids and adults go pee and poop. You are a big kid now and it'll be time for you to use the potty too, soon." Explain it right out. Don't be bashful saying "pee" or "poop" or "potty". These are the most common potty training words used and your child needs to have specific words to use in order to be able to understand and express their need to go.
Next ask your toddlers opinion. "What do you think of the potty?", "Would you like to try to go pee or poop on the potty instead of in your diaper?" Asking these questions gives your child the option. Early on in potty training it is a good idea to give your child the option because if you try to force a toddler to train you may end up regressing and delaying him or her instead. Another option I've always given my toddlers is whether they wanted to wear a diaper or underwear for the day. Underwear are a must have for toilet training. It is nearly impossible to train a toddler who is wearing a diaper because diapers are to go in. Toddlers can get very confused about toilet learning because up until all the potty training begins the place to go is in the diaper they are wearing. When underwear get put on the goal is to stay fresh and dry...to not go in their pants. They are actually being trained to do the opposite of what they've always known and done. Giving options makes it seem more like you are giving them a choice rather than making them do something that's new and strange. Each morning when getting dressed and each time you give a diaper change offer your child a diaper or underwear. Literally hold them up for your child to see and let him or her pick which they'd like to wear. At first, for a week or so, your child will most likely choose the diaper. You'll see though that as time passes children will want to train if they are not made to train. Children who want to train will learn very quickly. Most will be pretty much fully potty trained in two to three weeks. Some kids will train more quickly, others may take a little longer.
The last step is to teach your child to sit on the potty. You may have to help him or her off and on a few times but children learn how to do this in their own in no time flat. At first it's a good idea to stay close by. After a week or so of wearing underwear each day and sitting on the potty every hour or so you'll see that your child is much more independent than they were when you began training. During the second week most toddlers become trained. A few may pick it up in a matter of days while others may take a few weeks.
Offer training underware or disposable training pants. Disposable training pants are just like underware and like diapers too. They go on like underware and to your toddler they are. To you they hold urine and poop a lot better than underware do when accidents happen. Clean up is much easier during those firt days with disposable training pants than it is with underware. Wrok you way to regular cloth underware.
Potty training is a mile stone just like crawling and walking are. As a parent and potty training coach it is very important to remain very positive and to provide lots of encouragement. Toddlers need support. They need to know they are doing a great job. Never scold for accidents. This can regress and delay your toddler. Accidents are a part of learning. They are plenty in the first week, fewer and more far between in the second week and nearly obsolete in the third week. Accidents are ok. Just simply get fresh and dry and try again. If you watch for the signs, give options, have LOTS of underwear, sit your child on the potty, and stay positive you will have a toilet trained child before you know it!
