Japanese Dog Training
piece on having a puppy, training, rescue dog
Take, for instance, our version of dog training right here at home in eastern Canada. Recently our family decided that now is the time to have a family pet. Both kids are old enough to handle the responsibility one child is eleven and the other is sixteen. The dog would get us out walking ( my husband and I ) since we are hitting those dangerous years between thinking that you are twenty but actually feeling like your sixty. A dog would round out the old family well, we all thought!
Our new dog came from a rescue shelter ( Rosie's, to be more specific). They were wonderful. We wanted a puppy and we got a puppy! The cutest little thing since sliced bread. I know what a cliche that sounds like but really she is adorable. We called her Trinity after the cool character in the Matrix movies. We did, after all, want a " cool " dog. Who wants a dog without character?
We had no idea what we were getting into. The training involved! Well puppies are like children, they do not come with instructions. So it seemed we would have to embark on this adventure of training on our own.
My husband, a dog lover extraordinaire, took on the job of head dog trainer. He could be heard for miles around yelling at the top of his lungs " heeeeyyyyyyyy". And there would be a moment of silence and again the familiar sound could be heard yet again.........." heyyyyyyyyyyyy!" Along with the familiar war cry came the patter or running of footfalls and prancing paws......not necessarily in that order! Pretty soon the whole family was yelling " hheeyyyyy" We had become samurai dog trainers!
We have had our puppy now for about two months and she has learned quit a bit! She cries now when she wants to go outside. She can sit and give her paw. She sort of understands her name and ours....but most of all I think she has learned some basic Japanese. Heeeyyyyyyyy being the number one piece of vocabulary that she has picked up. She's a clever little puppy. Her name suits her well.
My husband has taken to wearing kimono's and eating sushi and the familiar cry of " hhhheeeeeyyyy" can still be heard for miles around. Japanese dog training the wave of the future. Who'd a thunk it?
