Product Comparison: Various Dog Collars and Harnesses
Because dogs cannot verbalize anything but the most egregious pain, dog collar and harness manufacturers often make false claims pertaining to comfort.
For the same reason it is difficult, if not impossible, to obtain canine feedback on the relative comfort or discomfort of these products, although it is possible to make some common-sense assessments. On the other hand it is difficult for humans to fully grasp the feel of a device being attached to their neck that is capable of controlling their movements.
Because no loving dog-owner wants their pet to experience unnecessary discomfort, the manufacturers of collars and harnesses all claim that their products are comfortable. However, it seems logical that some products must be more comfortable than others, and baring direct canine feedback, dog-owners need to take a skeptical approach.
It would seem to stand to reason that thin dog collars, collars made of stiff materials such as metal and un-padded dog collars and harnesses all would be less comfortable than wide, well-padded and flexible collars. With those parameters in mind an analysis of the various collars and harnesses on the market demonstrates that not all are the same, and some that claim to be comfortable for dogs are extremely reliant on canine inability to protest.
A particularly glaring example, the Pet-Safe Extra Comfort fit collar more like a torture device than an "extra comfort" collar. Another example of claimed collar comfort that seems illogical is the PetSmart "comfort, chain collar" of metal alone, the collar contains intertwined rope so that the result is not just the discomfort of metal alone but the possibility of rope burns as well.
One manufacturer of collars and harnesses, as well as muzzles does seem to be able to put themselves in the canine's place and have a good understanding of what kinds of collars and harnesses will maximize the pet's comfort is Dean and Tyler productshttp://www.deantylerproducts.com/The D. amp; T. Delight dog collar must be the most comfortable collar on the market today, while the D.T. Harness looks to be an equally comfortable harness.
