A Love Letter to Friday Night Lights
A review of why I love Friday Night Lights, includes character descriptions and my favorite quotes.
You do not have to be a football fan to enjoy FNL, but because I was initially under that assumption, I didn't watch the show at all during its premiere season on NBC in 2020-2020.
I stumbled onto FNL when I was wandering around a video store in Athens, GA. I saw that the show's first season was on DVD and that I could rent all five discs for five bucks.
For me, the reason the show is so special is that it's realistic. I believe there are small Southern towns obsessed with football. I believe most of the situations these characters get themselves into, especially in regards to the demands of family and career.
The characters are complex and believable. I believe there are guys out there like Tim Riggins-guys who want to be good, and yet they make the wrong choices.
Speaking of characters, here's a break-down of the principle ones:
Coach Eric Taylor is played by Kyle Chandler. He's the head high school football coach of the Dillon Panthers. When the team wins, he's a hero. When they lose, people want to run him out of town on a pitchfork. What I love most about this character is that Kyle Chandler, whether he's an actual Southerner or not, has mastered the subtle Southern accent and speech patterns. He's so convincing in this role that even his body language and mannerisms are spot on.
Tami Taylor is played by Connie Britton. She's the coach's wife. Tami works as guidance counselor at the school where her husband coaches, and then later she becomes principal. She gives great advice and has a penchant for being right on nearly every occasion.
Julie Taylor is Tami and Eric's daughter. She attends Dillon High and dates Matt Saracen for most of the series thus far. Julie occasionally gets on my nerves, but hey, she's a teenage girl. What teenage girl isn't annoying or whiny from time to time?
Matt Saracen hasbeen one of my favorite characters since the first episode. Love that he's shy and humble, but must learn to overcome that in his role as quarterback. His father's in Iraq, (until season four, but I don't want to give out any spoilers) his mother abandoned him when he was seven years old, and he was raised by his affectionately demented grandmother.
Tim Riggins is my other favorite character. He plays fullback on the Dillon Panther's team. Tim is known for being an excessive drinker. He's also the town whore. Tim also has two absent parents. He lives with his older brother Billy.
Tyra Collette is the former girlfriend of Tim Riggins. She has a mother who often gives terrible advice and a sister who works as a stripper. Tyra wants to be the first in her family to go to college, but her tendency to ditch class and her sojourn with a cowboy hurt her chances of bettering herself.
Lyla Garrity is a cheerleader for the panthers in season one who becomes a born again Christian in season two. She is romantically involved with both Jason Street and Tim Riggins.
Jason Street is the star quarterback who becomes paralyzed in the first episode. He's best friends with Tim Riggins. Most of his struggles deal with his adjustment to being a quadriplegic as well as his acceptance of it.
Smash Williams has dreams of making it to the NFL and gaining fame and fortune. He also wants to provide his family with a large house and a better life.
There are plenty of peripheral characters. Among my favorites is Landry Clark, Matt's best friend and lead singer of a Christian speed metal band called Crucifictorious (sp?). Landry has gradually been given a much larger role in the series.
Kevin Rankin, who plays Jason's friend Herc, (seasons 1-3) had me so convinced that he was a hillbilly quadriplegic that when I saw him guest star on Grey's Anatomy and The Closer, I couldn't believe he wasn't in a wheelchair and that his Southern accent had disappeared.
Last, but not least is Buddy Garrity. He's a former panther, turned middle-aged father of three. He's obsessed with the panthers and even attends their practice sessions. He's also Lyla's father and the owner of Garrity Motors, a car dealership.
Shout out to Louanne Stephens and Liz Mikel who are both convincing in their respective roles as Matt's grandma and Smash's mother (seasons 1-3).
Season four introduced a whole new set of characters:
Vince is the quarterback of the East Dillon Lions. He has a juvenile record and often hangs with a crowd that encourages his juvenile behavior. Michael B. Jordan is good in this role, and he almost brought me to tears as I watched him at the bedside of his drug-addicted mother.
Jess is involved romantically with both Vince and Landry. She works after school at her father's barbeque restaurant.
Becky lives with her bartender mother and develops a thing for Riggins. In the latter part of the season, she's involved in an unexpected storyline involving Luke and Tami.
Luke is the running back for The East Dillon Lions. He was raised on a farm by Christian parents. He's at times annoyingly polite. He wants to get off the farm and earn a football scholarship so badly that he sacrifices his health by playing injured.
Favorite Quotes:
"So there's this girl dancin' to devil went down to Georgia. She's new and I walk up to her and I'm all, 'B*tch, that's my signature song. Step off!' I'll kick her ass. I dance in boots and chaps and a thong. What the hell is she thinkin'?" -Mindy, the stripper
"...And then there's the whole global warming issue which is some big, giant diabolical illusion created by the EPA, who are out there strangling polar bears with their bare hands." -Julie Taylor
"Where's Voodoo?"-Matt Saracen
"I don't know, Saracen. He's probably jerking around in front of a full-length mirror."-Tim Riggins
"When you say nice shirt, though, you don't mean the one with the periodic table on it?" -Jess
If you have Netflix, you can watch all of seasons 1-3 instantly from your computer. And of course, you could always rent the DVDs or buy them inexpensively online from retailers such as Amazon.com or BestBuy.com. FNL just finished its fourth season on DirecTV's 101network. The season will re-air on NBC beginning in April.
