Cell Phone Jammers: Illegal Conveniences
Legal in most other countries, cell phone jammers are classified as radio transmitters which require publicaly unavailable licensing to use in the United States. Too bad!
One of the more prevalent annoyances of modern life is created by the intended convenience of cellular technology. The same technological innovation that allows individuals access to instant wireless phone and other electronic communications, can be a terribly intrusive nuisance to others in public places.
Who among us has not had the experience of watching a play or film or dining ina restaurant when suddenly, a cell phone rings and a thoughtless person takes the call and begins the conversation as though everyone else in the room wanted to hear it?
In days of old, phone booths contained these should-be private conversations. There are no more phone booths, except in old episodes of "Dr. Who" where they were used for time and space travel and in old versions of Superman, where he used them to change his clothing in.
Availability and Cost
Although unavailable for purchase here in the United States, they can be found for sale on retail websites located in other countries. They range in price from under $100 to well over $1,000. The differences are, primarily, in the power of the device manifested in the range of its effectiveness.
The larger units, like those in use in France and many other countries, can block cell signals in an entire dining room, theater or auditorium. The smaller ones have a range that may be as limited as 10-30 feet and are most useful to stiflecellular intrusions in an office or other circumscribed limited range.
How They Work
While there a number of different specific technologies used in the design and manufacture of these devices, they have a key operational function in common. Each one transmits a signal that is of a type and frequency set to deliberately interfere (or 'block') cell phone signals. When one is activated and a cell phone comes in its range, the signal strength bars vanish. No signal reaches the phone.
Not all cell phones operate using the same signal technology. The most common types in use around the world today include those identified as GSM (Global System for Mobile communications) is an internationally used standard. There are, however, others used by some cell phone companies.
Three of the other more common types of signals are the ones known as CDMA ( Code Division Multiple Access), 3G/4G ( the IEEE 802.11 protocol for wireless technology) and the DCS (Distributed Control System.) A blocker that sends out signals to more types is most versatile and most apt to be effective no matter where you are.
Finding One
Again, these are not legally licensable in the United States at this time. Bit if you are inclined to investigate cell phone jammers more fully, it is a simple matter of going to (dare I say it?) GOOGLE, choosing the basic "Web" function and simply entering "Cell phone jammer" in the search box.
