How to Lose Weight by Rope Jumping
Jumping rope is more than a childhood game.
Once the staple of boxers' fitness training, jumping is increasingly being integrated into formal fitness plans and exercise classes for nonathletes, both men and women.
Properly executed, a workout combining jumping with other aerobic activities such as jogging, biking or stair climbing represents an easy, inexpensive cross-training method that can be enjoyed by all ages.
Before jumping in, however, there are a few simple rules and suggestions to follow to help prevent injuries and ensure that you get the most benefit from your workout.
For the beginner, the most important rule to remember is start slow and do not overdo it.
It is recommended to start out by jumping approximately one minute, or 50 jumps, per set, gradually working up to three to four minutes, or 150 to 200 jumps, per set.
Make sure you jump at a steady, even pace, jumping only high enough to clear the rope. (Jumping high off the ground will not increase the effectiveness of your workout, but will increase your chances of tripping.) Do not try to set a speed record when jumping rope. Once your muscles are warmed up and working, the duration, not the speed, of your routine determines its overall effectiveness. On the average, most people jump between 60 and 150 turns per minute. Find the pace that is ~ most comfortable for you, and stick to it.
Turn the rope with your wrists and forearm, not the shoulders, keeping your back straight as you jump. To help maintain proper posture, look straight ahead rather than at your feet as you jump.
Wear shoes with adequate shock absorption, such as aerobic or cross-training shoes. Avoid jumping on hard surfaces such as concrete. Wooden gym floors are the ideal surface, but if you are outdoors, jumping on grass or packed dirt is a safe alternative.
To protect knees and increase energy efficiency, alternate feet while jumping.
To improve/strengthen the upper body, try using a rope with weighted handles. Start with a 2-pound rope and gradually work up to a 4- to 5-pound rope. One note of caution: Using a too heavy rope can cause muscle strain similar to tennis elbow.
If any pain results following your workout, rest for a few days and decrease the amount of handle weight used.
Or, if you have a stationary bicycle or StairMaster, break up your routine by using the equipment for five minutes, then jumping rope for two to three minutes, then returning to the equipment and repeating this cycle three more times for a 30-minute workout.
