Celebrating New Year's Eve with Children: Helpful Tips
Plan a fun family-friendly New Year's party with your children. Make the night special with fondest memory games, baking tasty snacks, and more.
Tips for Celebrating New Year's Eve with Children
Make the New Year's Eve party extra-special for your children by inviting them to plan the night's events with you. Consider letting each child invite one friend over for a sleep-over. This is also a nice idea of if you have nieces or nephews that live close by, as it will give their parents a chance to go out.
New Year's Eve Menu
As a family make a menu of your favorite foods. Is there a special soup or salad you like? Is there a family favorite dish and dessert? Plan the New Year's Eve menu around the family's tastes. Kids can even help you write up a menu.
Sit down as a family and talk about your favorite memories from the year. With older children, you can have them each write down their favorite memory and then the family can guess which memory belongs to which family member.
Encourage each family member to make one New Year's resolution. Work with children to plan a practical and realistic New Year's resolution.
Balloon Popping Game
Make your own family coupons to slip inside balloons. This is best suited for children older than three, due to the potential choking hazard of balloon pieces. On a small slip of paper write down treats, special events and chore reliefs. For example, "Stay up an extra half hour on the weekend," "I get to pick dessert today," "I can skip my chore today." Family members can use the coupons at a later date.
Roll up each paper and slip them into the balloon. You could also roll up a dollar bill or two, to make the game even more fun. Blow up the balloons and save them in a garbage bag.
For the game, place a big blanket or old sheet on the floor. Dump the balloons out over the sheet. The game is to stomp on the balloons and win a prize. To reduce the chaos, let one person have a turn, followed by the next player.
New Year's Eve Party Favors
Kids love noisemakers and hats, even if parent's are not always fond of them. With young children, set your own countdown time, counting down from 10 to 1, this is when you give kids their noisemakers.
New Year's Eve Crafts
For toddlers and preschoolers, you can work on clock crafts. Use a paper plate to draw a simple clock face. Attach the hands, made of construction paper, by using a brad.
Make natural noisemakers by placing any dry rice or beans in recycled water bottle or soda bottle. Or put the dry beans on a paper plates, put the beans or rice in the middle, fold the plate and half and staple the edges together. Let kids decorate the noisemaker with feathers, crayons and sequins.
New Year's Eve Movie Night
If your family has a favorite movie, or there is a movie you all want to watch together, take some time to watch it.
Muffin Tin Snack Time
Spread a variety of healthy fruit and crunchy snacks into a muffin tin, for movie snack time. Add grapes into one circle, raisins in another, Goldfish crackers, mini marshmallows, chocolate chips or M amp; Ms, pretzels, cut up carrot sticks , sunflower seeds, or any other snacks that fit.
