Don't Start Too Early
Many parents look forward to trying to get their little girls potty trained as soon as they can walk. However, this is way too early. It is usually not appropriate to start potty training until the little girl is at least two. At this point, the toddler is better able to control their muscles in the bladder and bowels.
Using Dolls as Examples
One of the newest methods for potty training involves dolls that wet, complete with big girl underpants for the doll, dolly potty seat, and lots of water for the doll and the little girl. The idea is to use the doll to demonstrate the process of the child going to the potty. The trainer is to give the doll water and food to make it "go potty".
The next step is that once the doll does potty on the doll potty seat, that trainer should make a huge deal of it. In other words, a dolly potty party is in order, because this is a big deal. It can be as extravagant as you want, such as hats and horns. This gives your little girl the idea that going to the potty and not in the diaper is a wonderful thing and a celebration is warranted. The next step would be to inform the child that once she goes potty on the potty that she will also have a party in her honor.
Now that the child has seen the doll go to the potty, it is now time for the doll to move from diapers and into big kid's undies. This is also the time to place underwear for your little girl into her dresser.
Now the fun part...the actual training. The parent is to give the child liquids to encourage the child to go to the potty. The little girl should remember that the same thing happened with the doll. This should get your child to the point of having to go to the bathroom. Now comes the question that you will become very familiar with, "Do you have to go potty?"
Most little girls will tell you over and over again, "NO". Moreover, they may not yet realize that they have to. However, at this point it is best that every so often you ask your little girl if she has to go. The inevitable will happen, because she has had her fill of liquids. If your little girl makes and "oopsy" do not yell at her or be mad, because the idea is that every aspect of the training is wonderful for everyone. Instead, you take your little girl to the potty, pull her underwear down, and put her on the potty. It is suggested that you do this at least ten times, as this process allows the muscles to memorize what they feel, and eventually enables the little lady to use the potty for the first time.
This is the time that your little girl will also experience her very first party for pottying. Throw it just the way the one was thrown for your little girl's doll. At this point, you are well on your way to potty training your little girl.
It is important to remember that if she has an accident, not to punish her. Go back to the method of putting her on the potty ten times in a row, which continues the muscle memory training. In no time at all you will be moving from the potty to the toilet.
