Should I Worry If My Three-Year-Old Isn't Potty Trained?
If your three-year-old is still not potty trained, it may be time to take a breather. Find out why you shouldn't worry if your three-year-old is still in diapers.
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends approaching potty training in a relaxed manner, and you will find that this is the least stressful method for everyone involved. You may begin to feel pressure from friends and family to speed the potty training process along, but it is important to remember that your three-year-old will not be in diapers forever. There are a lot of fun things to experience together at this age, and potty training should not have the entire family stressed out on a regular basis.
If your three-year-old is resisting potty training, it may be best to back off for a while. Without ridiculing your child, point out how parents and older siblings go to the toilet when they need to. Let your three-year-old know that using the potty is what big people do, but never make fun of her or call her a baby for not going.
Make the switch from regular diapers to training pants if you haven't already. Three-year-olds will likely be delighted by the fun designs on training pants, and they have more of the feel and appearance of underwear. Your child can practice pulling training pants up and down like underwear, and this may spark an interest in wearing real underwear or using the potty.
Invest in potty training books and videos. Without placing pressure on your child, simply start reading books and watching movies about potty training. If your child hates all things related to potty training, it may be helpful to just present the material in an entertaining manner without talking much about it at first. You may find that your child is more open to discussing potty training after seeing other kids or familiar characters using the toilet.
Parents of older toddlers and preschoolers are often surprised when a child who has resisted potty training suddenly makes the decision to be a "big kid" and start using the potty. You cannot force your child to control his bodily functions, and you should not try. In a few years, it won't matter if your three-year-old was still in diapers after his friends were wearing underwear. What will matter is whether or not you approach the process, and other stressful situations, with patience or anger.
If you have any concerns about your three-year-old not being toilet trained, talk to your child's doctor. But remember that this is a fleeting period of your child's life, and in the grand scheme of things, a few extra months of potty training isn't really anything to worry about.
