Choosing the Right Flight School for You
Making sure you are obtaining safe, complete, and up to date flight training is not only the job of the flight school, but yours as a student as well. Some schools, specifically degree-oriented schools will want you to fly at least three or four times per week and stress the idea that the more a person flies per week, the more money the student ultimately saves. This notion makes sense on the surface, but remember that the flight school is a business too, and it's out there to make money from its flight training facilities. If they book you for flights in an aircraft and fill up their schedules, and if they charge you $200 or more for each cancellation without 24 hours prior notice, you can see how these schools are almost guaranteeing themselves revenue. Not by counting on you to cancel with less than 24 hours advanced notice, but by making sure you're essentially locked into the flying schedule they have set up with you and therefore guaranteeing themselves your business. If you are already on a tight schedule as it is and are looking to add flight training to the mix, it may be difficult to meet the school's recommended requirement of flying three or four times per week. Don't fret, there are many ways to make flight school work for you.
Where There's a Will There's a Way
Flying five times a week is hard enough on a person's pocketbook, let alone their schedule. The best way to get the most for your money at any flight school is to truly apply yourself in your studies at home and during the flight or ground lesson. A student who applies themselves and flies once or twice a week will succeed and advance far more quickly than a student who just shows up to their flight lesson every day with no idea what is going on and not having studied any of the material. In this way, you can save yourself thousands of dollars by being prepared before each lesson and by making the most of your time in the air. Be sure you get enough sleep and don't show up to your lessons on an empty stomach.
Getting the Most from Your Instructor
Flight instructors are people too, just like you and me. And in this way they are out to make a living and try to provide good quality flight instruction. Since most CFI's make less than $30,000 per year, some instructors are more concerned with logging the free flight time they get while instructing you, and less with providing high quality, high value instruction. If you feel that your instructor is not more concerned about your progress as a student than his or her own pursuit of flight hours, you should make plans to switch instructors immediately. This will potentially save you hundreds if not thousands of dollars in lost productivity and flight lesson quality. Look for instructors who seem happy to be doing what they are doing. People who enjoy their job almost always provide higher quality output or instruction. Also, make sure your instructor is a good fit with your personality and goals. Some instructors are much more serious and goal-oriented while others take a more laid-back approach to flight instruction. Your personality traits and goals should dictate what type of instructor would benefit you the most.
Another great way to get the most from your instructor is to keep track of your goals relative to obtaining your pilot's license. Use these goals to create a map or plan of action as to what you'll hopefully be covering in each lesson. Sometimes it's helpful to plan backwards from you FAA check ride (final test with the FAA) and then work out your schedule according to your own specific needs.

Another great way to keep flight school costs low is to keep track of your finances down to the last penny. Many students have to take out loans to finance their way through school and don't keep a close eye on their funds situation. Do make sure you know what is being spent where and in doing so you'll find that good money management equals lower educational costs. If it is a loan that you're using to pay for training, remember, you do have to pay every cent back and then some, so use it wisely and don't take it for granted.
