I say this because nine times out of 10 when purchasing a new or used vehicle, you're not purchasing the car at wholesale value. Dealers buy new and used cars at wholesale value and resale the car to the public at retail price. The differentiation in price from wholesale to retail can be marked up $15-$50000, so from the very starting point you are already in a loose situation. New cars are not marked up in price as much as used cars. The markup varies. It is essential that you know the value of a car before purchasing. That way when entering a dealership in discussing negotiations you can make an educated decision and dictate a deal that will benefit you in the long run. Now back to not putting money down on a car. Once you have successfully negotiated the deal you still have to pay taxes and tags on that car depending on the price of the vehicle. The taxes and tags can range between 500 to $4-$5000. Now let's say you did purchase the car at wholesale value, you got a steal from the dealership. The cars worth $25,000 and you paid $25,000 but the taxes and tags increase your total to $27000.
