How to Master the Classic Pool Stroke
Here is a how to on how to make that perfect classic pool stroke
The classic stroke is sort of like throwing the cue forward. Rather than pushing the cue in a forward motion, it is better to hold your shooting arm at a 90 degree angle (although some hold their arm at a less than 90 degree angle) during the back swing and simulate throwing the cue forward to give yourself a straight shot.
During the back swing, you are lining your cue up to the cue ball, but you don't want to do this too far away from the ball. You only want to be inches away from the ball because being too far away can cause several different scenarios such as missing the ball or hitting it in the wrong place. Being close to your target comes in handy several times throughout a pool game, but not as important as how you hold your cue.
When holding the cue stick properly, it makes the stick feel light. The shooting arm (the back arm) should be at or almost at a 90 degree angle and the forearm is angled forward with the cue stick almost parallel with the table. If you're holding the stick at a steep angle with the forearm, it can cause it to feel heavier to the shooting arm.
The next thing to the classic pool stroke is how you're holding it in your shooting hand. Your shooting hand is your guide and some prefer to hold the stick different than others. Some guide with knuckles, some place it between their finger and thumb like a pencil, and others guide it with their hyper-extended thumb. It is very important that you find a guiding method that suits you rather than what works for someone else. At this point, your shooting arm should be the only thing moving when you pull back the cue to make the shot. Your shooting hand, your trunk, and legs should not move so that you can throw the cue into the shot to get that target ball into your target pocket.
Now you've made contact with the ball and your shooting arm is at less than a 90 degree angle while following through with the shot. It may even look like the cue is following the ball although it isn't touching it. You have now made the perfect classic pool stroke. While making the shot, just make sure you concentrate on the target ball and not the cue ball. You already lined up with the cue ball, so now you have to watch your target ball to ensure the cue ball hits it in the right spot.
The classic pool stroke is great for center ball shots, but sometimes other stroke styles are required based on what position you need to shoot from. This stroke is a good place to start and you can then experiment with the other stroke styles to improve your pool game.
