Basic Dog Training Tips

Dogs are pack animals that, by nature, all want to be the boss of the pack. Here are a few ways to get their attention and establish your unquestionable dominance ...

As my daddy used to say: "First, ya get their attention". He wasn't specifically talking about pet training, but the philosophy applies. The foremost tool for dog training is the exercise of your control over the animal. For that is what dogs are, animals; pack animals that, by nature, all want to be the boss of the pack. Here are a few ways to get their attention and establish your unquestionable dominance:

Dog Training Tip #1 - The Alpha Dog Eats First
No matter how many times a day you choose to feed your dog, always make sure the pup watches you eat first, even if it's just a bite or two of something. In the wild, the Alpha dog always has his fill of the kill before any others in the pack may partake. This will help establish your dominant roll in a language of instinctual behavior the dog innately understands.

Dog Training Tip #2 - You Never Bite The Alpha
Unless you are training your pet to be an attack dog, never "play" fight with him. Play fighting is a puppy's "boot camp" training, as it were. The training should be directed to inanimate objects (chew toys) to preclude the puppy from ever thinking it can use its developing skills to challenge your position, as it will naturally be inclined to do.

This is a hard one, because it's so darn much fun to engage in the mock combat. But it is critical that your dog know he or she may never use its teeth on you - or any other human, for that matter. This is another powerful display of your dominance; you will not entertain any challenge from the puppy, cementing your Alpha position.

Dog Training Tip #3 - Fido Needs A Den
To establish for the dog that he or she has a secure place in the pack, you need to supply it with a safe, comfortable - out of the way, but still in view of the "action" - sanctuary. This is where the dog will, for the most part, sleep and keep company with its favorite possessions (read: Toys). This will bolster the dog's self esteem and individuality. He will never be the Alpha, but he does own this little corner of the Den.

Crate training is perfect for this, but any manner of soft bedding and semi-privacy will suffice, even if it's just a folded up blanket next to your recliner. This also gives you a place to send the dog to reflect (albeit it very briefly) when he or she has misbehaved.

Dog Training Tip #4 - A Dog That Comes Is Always A Good Dog
If you find need to discipline your dog, go to it. Never call the dog to you for discipline or "punishment". To do so creates a true conundrum in your dog's mind and will result in an animal that is reluctant to obey any of your commands. Such abusive (to his thinking) action undermines your natural authority as the Alpha animal, displaying to your dog a capricious application of your power that will foster distrust.

Using the basic dog training tips above will help assure that any, more specific, training you wish to provide your Best Friend will likely be met with eager compliance. When your position as Alpha is unchallengeable, your dog will move heaven and earth to please you.
