Motorcycle Safety Classes in the Chicago Area

Motorcycle safety classes or basic rider's course go a long way in improving a motorcycle rider's overall safety on the road. This article contains a guide to some of the courses offered in the Chicago area.

Motorcycles represent approximately 5 percent of all highway fatalities each year even though they only make up 2% of all registered vehicles in the United States.

More than half of the accident-involved riders had less than 5 months experience on the accident involved motorcycle.

92 percent of motorcyclists involved in crashes were either self taught or trained by family or friends.

Motorcycle riders who are unlicensed or improperly licensed are over-represented in fatal crashes by more that 100% nationally and by as much as 400% in some states.

There are more than a few safety course options available to riders in the Chicago area. Here is a list of some great programs and classes offered in Chicagoland and around the state of Illinois.

Illinois Department of Transportation Motorcycle Safety Classes

The best option for any resident of Illinois are the free motorcycle safety classes sponsored by the Illinois Department of Transportation and various state universities. Courses are open to all Illinois residents 16 and older. The program is run by one of four state universities depending on your region. Northern Illinois University runs programs in the northern region, Illinois State University runs the programs in the west-central region, the University of Illinois programs cover the east-central region and Southern Illinois University runs the programs for the southern half of the state. To find a course near you or to see what school runs the courses in your part of the state click here. Courses are generally 3 days long and a run from early spring through fall every year. Locations and specifics vary with each program but they all fill up pretty far in advance so planning is definitely required. A list of programs sponsored by the Illinois Department of transportation can be found by clicking here. With all courses, students take a written and riding test at the conclusion of the class and those who pass both parts receive a completion card which allows the rider to get their Illinois motorcycle license from the secretary of state without taking the exam again.

Ride Chicago

Ride Chicago is a privately owned motorcycle training school. They offer the classroom portion of the course at their office in Chicago and riding sections are offered in the city adjacent to the United Center or in the suburbs at Toyota Park in Bridgeview. The course costs $295 and there's an additional $40 charge to take the licensing test with them. One major advantage they have over the state sponsored program is the large number of classes available to meet any schedule and classes don't fill up immediately so you don't need to reserve your spot in January for a July course as with the state programs. For those who don't have the patience to wait for a state sponsored course, Ride Chicago is a great option. Many riders I have personally spoken with have highly recommended Ride Chicago both for excellent instruction and enjoyable classes and their online reviews are overwhelmingly positive. For more information about classes, scheduling, and pricing at Ride Chicago click here.

Motorcycle Riding School

Motorcycle Riding School located at 1400 N. Halsted in Chicago is another private motorcycle training program. They were the first private school in Illinois to be certified by The Motorcycle Safety Foundation. Courses run from April through October and are completed over two consecutive days with a separate day of testing for those who wish to complete their licensing through them. The cost of the basic rider course is $350 with no additional fees for licensing or testing if you choose to take the test with them. They also have a wider availability of classes on shorter notice than the state programs so they are another good option for those who don't want to wait. More information about Motorcycle Riding School can be found by clicking here.

Harley-Davidson Rider's Edge

Wildfire Harley-Davidson runs a Rider's Edge motorcycle training school in Villa Park, IL. Rider's Edge is the only official Harley sponsored riding program. The classes offered by Wildfire Harley-Davidson run from April to October and consist of two nights of classroom training followed by two days of on-bike training. Course instructors are all certified by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation as well as Harley-Davidson. Like the state run programs, upon successful completion of the course riders receive a completion card that exempts them from the written and riding licensing exams with the secretary of state. The course costs $350 but graduates receive a $50 credit from Harley-Davidson upon completing the course. For more information about Wildfire Harley-Davidson's Rider's Edge classes click here.

Illinois Council of Safety

The Illinois Council of Safety offers motorcycle training classes in the western suburbs. Despite what their name implies, they are a privately owned and operated motorcycle training school, not a government agency. They offer weekend classes in West Chicago, IL (about 45 minutes from downtown) starting in the spring and running through fall. This is a good option for suburban riders who prefer not to venture into the city and don't have the patience to wait for a state run class. Basic courses start at $350 and include the licensing test should you choose to take it with them. More information about Illinois Council of Safety classes can be found by clicking here.
