The Hidden Costs of Taking Online Courses
Online courses offer some great advantages, but they also have some hidden costs associated with them. Know your facts before you enroll.
Extra Tuition Fees. This is probably the most overlooked extra expense of taking online classes, and perhaps the most surprising. Many institutions charge an extra "internet" or "distance course" fee for classes that are taken online. Online courses may cost $50-$200 extra per credit hour just because they happen to be internet courses. Make sure you check the tuition carefully and ask about additional fees for online courses before enrolling in any degree program.
High-Speed Internet Access. If you still operate on dial-up internet, or rely on the public library or other source for high speed internet access, this will need to change in order for you to be successful in an online degree program. Online coursework may require you to watch streaming videos over the internet, download and upload very large files, and a variety of other tasks that would take eons to perform using a slower internet connection. Having 24/7 access to high speed internet is also crucial to online course success.
Long-Distance Phone Charges. You will more than likely need to contact your professor via phone at some point during the semester when taking online courses. If the institution offering the coursework is not local, you will incur long distance phone charges for the calls. While email is a wonderful tool and it is used often by students taking online courses, sometimes having a back and forth dialogue with your professor is necessary.
Gas Mileage. Gas mileage? Did you think that only those taking courses on campus would spend money on gas? In reality, most students who complete online courses also have to spend gas money to complete various assignments. You may be asked to do extensive research which means many trips to a nearby university library. You could have field experience hours that are required for your online course. Just because you are taking courses online doesn't mean you won't spend any money on gas.
Overall, taking online courses is a great way to access coursework from a far away institution, or to be able to work on your courses at any time you please. Online courses may offer a few financial surprises for some students; however, so be aware of the hidden costs of taking online courses upfront.
