Congratulations Jersey City, NJ Police Academy Graduates - December 11, 2020
Excellent ceremony highlights and what they mean to me.
The mayor of Jersey City, Jerramiah T. Healy addressed the proceedings and offered his words as follows:
"Community service is an altruistic commitment that the majority does not make. It is a calling to give of one's self for the betterment of society.
The credo a police officer takes brings that commitment to yet an immesaurable plateau, not just a commitment of service to the community, but to protect it as well. To Protect and Serve: there are few higher callings one can subscribe to.
As graduates of the 76th Academy class of the Jersey City Police Department you will be called upon to excel in many of the most unpredictable circumstances. You will be asked to face danger when our most basic human instinct is to flee to safety. Indeed, this is a challenge.
And as you go forth into our neighborhoods as those who keep the peace, do remember this: show courage in the face of danger and show compassion in moments of strife or sorrow. While you mere presence bodes toward the improvement of the quality of life of our residents and visitors, remain diligent and keep yourself safe in the execution of your duties."
The ceremony began and ended with the procession of the Port Authority of NY/NJ Pipe and Drum Band, Fraternal Order of Police Honor Guard, NJ Hispanic Law Enforcement Honor Guard, Jersey City Emerald Society Honor Guard and the Hudson County Honor Guard. Just hearing the bagpipes brought me back to the events surrounding September 11, 2001 and chills went up my spine.
The joyful celebration was also overshadowed by the death of one of their own, Detective Marc Anthony DiNardo, an Academy Instructor was killed in the line of duty in July of 2020. He was only thirty-seven years old, and left behind a beautiful wife and three adorable children who will spend their first Christmas only a few weeks from today without him.
So to all of you fifty-two new police officers and sheriff's officers both male and female; I will keep you all in my prayers and ask Our Creator to keep you safe and strong. You are truly American heroes. You have been through a lot in these last several months and especially to you Sheriff's Officer Bartholomew D. Lore, I salute you!
