Saving the Family Farm with Dog Treats

In these times people are getting very creative to save what they love. So it doesn't sound that far fetched to save the family farm with dog treats or does it? How do you save a farm with dog treats? You will have to read on to find out.

The farm began right around the year 1900 in a small town in Delaware county NY, Bloomville. You have to look very hard on the map to find it. It was started by the Brownell family, in fact the road that the farm is on is named after the family, Brownell Rd. The farm house was built by hand by the Brownells. There are hand hewed beams that hold the house up. There is still part of the stone wall foundation that the house sits on. The Brownells put everything they had into that house. Lots of blood sweet and tears. In fact I have a diary from one of the Brownell girls from the year 1912. Hard to believe how life has changed over the last 100 years. I also have some great pictures of the house and the family.

The Brownells sold the farm to my grandparent, Tom and Anna Martin. A dairy farm of about 50 head of cows. The Brownells were related to my Grandmother. My Grandparent raised four girls in the house and took in every troubled boy in the town and gave them a roof over their head and food and guidance in exchange for working on the farm. My mother was the eldest of the four girls, Margaret. I have fond childhood memories of the farm. I was often the center of attention at the house and the house was always full and there was never a lack of action. I started helping out on the farm at around 8 years of age. Working side by side with my grandfather all the way through high school. My grandfather broke his back when I was a junior in high school so I had to do most of the work my junior and senior year. At the time I really didn't enjoy it, trying to have a social life at age 17, basketball and just being a kid was hard when you had to milk the cows twice a day and go to school. I learned responsibility at a young age. Looking back I would not change a single thing. It was a great bonding time with my grandparents and my mother. When I was getting close to graduating, my grandfather asked if I wanted the farm. I did not think about it long before answering no. I seen that it was seven days a week, hard work with little pay and figured there had to be a better way.

My Aunt and Uncle Bob and Jane Griffin took over the farm. I went on to be a UPS man. Often visiting the farm and even pitching in during the summers. When my Uncle had to have heart surgery I filled in for a weak and weekends. Funny how that works. What drove me away as a kid was calling me back as I got older. In 1998 my Aunt and Uncle asked if I wanted to buy the farm. I thought about it for a while and decided it was the right thing to do. I really haven't done much with the farm. I rent the land out to a local farmer and have done a little work to the house. I am now only two years from being able to retire from UPS. I am not the kind of person that would ever be able to retire with my feet in the air and doing nothing. I always knew I wanted to do something with the farm, but what?

My wife, Queny worked on Madison avenue in NYC selling high fashion. She was very good at it and made a very good living at it. It was not really what she wanted to do forever. So she decided to combine a couple of her passions together, cooking and Dogs. She came up with the idea of doing an organic Dog treat company. She put her savings into it and I contributed also. I figured about the time I am ready to retire I could just step right into a position at SavvyBeast Treats, our company name. We converted the kitchen into a commercial dog bakery and one of the other rooms in the farmhouse into a storage and packaging room. Made a website www.savvybeasttreats.com and started making treats. We currently are selling to 13 stores and growing.

When we get a little bit bigger we want to raise the organic beef and lamb right on the farm. That's how you save the family farm with organic dog treats. As we keep growing our dreams of bringing the fourth generation family farm back to its former glory and hopefully even beyond that. Dog treats of all things!!
